India is experiencing a notable uptick in Covid-19 cases, with active infections crossing the 4,000 mark for the first time in months. As of June 3, 2025, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reports 4,026 active cases nationwide, accompanied by five fatalities in the past 24 hours.

  • Deaths (Last 24 Hours): 5
  • Total Recoveries: Approximately 2,700
  • Total Fatalities: 37

The recent surge is attributed to the emergence of the NB.1.8.1 subvariant of Omicron, designated as a ‘Variant Under Monitoring’ by the World Health Organization.

🧬 Emergence of NB.1.8.1 Variant

The NB.1.8.1 subvariant, a mutation of the Omicron strain, has been identified in India. While it is highly transmissible, health experts note that it currently causes only mild symptoms, similar to the common cold or seasonal flu.

Health authorities recommend the following precautions:

  • Wear masks in crowded or enclosed spaces.
  • Maintain hand hygiene by washing hands regularly.
  • Avoid close contact with individuals exhibiting respiratory symptoms.
